A few weeks ago, I was really happy with how minimalistic I was. Our home was less messy, I didn’t buy new stuff I didn’t need and I gave the stuff I wanted to keep a new place in our home. This all changed when I went to my parents home, opened the door of my old bedroom and saw how many stuff there was still left in that room.
My interest in minimalism grew when I wanted to move out and get an own place. That was nice because I just moved all the things I liked and used to my new home. I quickly had a pleasing and minimalistic place.
A few weeks ago, my mother told me that she wanted to change some things in the house. Eventually, she wanted to use my old bedroom as her bedroom. I told her that I thought it was a great idea, I don’t use my old bedroom at all. I can’t even remember the last time I slept there. I said I’d use her holiday to clean out my room, so they could use my room as quick as possible when they would come back.
Oh boy, I was wrong. I went to my old bedroom multiple days to clean it out, but I still have a long way to go. I was shocked to see how many stuff I still own. I told my mother to put all my stuff she found in the house, on my desk. I can tell you: that was a lot. When I opened a cabinet, I was shocked by how many stuff I had been able to put in there.
Meanwhile, I’ve already done a lot. All my notes from school are now gone, as well as my old makeup stuff and other products.
Now comes the hardest part, because only the sentimental items are left. Old clothes I have good memories of, an old birthday card from my grandfather and grandmother, old (analogue) photos and so on.
Luckily I’m on the right way now, but it takes a lot of time. But I’m happy that I’m doing it in detail now. I also could have stored all my stuff somewhere, but I think I would have felt a pressure all the time. I still feel some pressure now, but the more I minimalise, the more the pressure disappears.
It made me realise that you can have a lot of stuff in someone else’s house. You can think you’re very minimalistic (I sure did that), but you can ‘forget’ that you still have a lot of stuff. So, how many boxes of your stuff are there still in your parents’ attic?
Now, a picture where you can see the current situation. I hope I can share a picture of a completely empty room in a while.
